Behavior Guidelines (Deutsch) (Español)(Italiano)(Norsk)(Polski)(Português)(Suomi)(Svenska)

Before you jump into Kongregate’s chat rooms and forums, please take a moment to read through our simple guidelines for expected behavior.

Note: this is not a complete list of rules, just a good list of suggestions for how to best keep out of trouble.

Don’t be a jerk. Embrace this concept, young grasshopper, and the rest of life’s rules will fall into place. Before you act, imagine yourself in an after-school special. Are you the pure-hearted kid trying to raise money for starving orphans, or are you the schoolyard bully with a fixation for swirlies?

Don’t harass others. If you find yourself harassing another user based on race, sexuality, religion, or nationality, just stop for a moment. Think to yourself, “How did I get to this point? What went wrong in my life, where I’m now hurling insults at a stranger in an online gaming community, using hateful language regarding sexual orientation?” You’re then free to hang your head in shame.

Don’t promote illegal activity. Yes, we’re all aware that you’re a l33t h4xor because you found a pirated game on the Internet. Please keep the exchange of such wares out of Kongregate’s community.

Don’t be excessively vulgar, abusive, or annoying. Mild swearing can be allowed, but it should not be directed at other users. There’s a difference between saying something like, “Damn, I suck at this game” and spewing profanity at another user in all caps, along with 7 lines’ worth of exclamation points. Extreme profanity will automatically be censored by our chat filter, though active moderators may not be as forgiving.

Don’t feed the trolls. If someone is acting in an inappropriate manner, please leave the situation up to the moderators online. If there are none, or they’re not responding, let us know. Please do not “fight back” or get drawn into an argument with them. That’s why they’re doing it in the first place — to get a reaction.

Don’t spam. Please do not spam chat by repeatedly sending the same message over and over. Don’t spam comments for games, either. Please don’t post “first!” if you happen to be lucky enough to be the first one to post a comment in a new game. You probably won’t be banned for doing this, but it’s really annoying, and the comment may be deleted.

You will, however, receive an immediate one-week ban without warning on the first offense for spamming chain letters, referral links, or other annoying material across game comments.

Do not link to inappropriate material in chat or unrelated websites in game comments. We at Kongregate know that there are other websites out there, and some of them are pretty awesome. We have no problem with users sharing links to outside websites in chat, as long as they’re not pornographic or otherwise obviously inappropriate. We’re also fine with outside links posted in game comments, as long as they somehow relate to a discussion about the specific game. Spamming referral links for other sites across games on Kongregate will not be tolerated.

Pick your username and avatar wisely. Offensive usernames and obscene, pornographic, or seizure-inducing avatars will not be tolerated. If your account has been banned because a moderator felt that it was inappropriate, you can email us for the possibility of having your account restored as a different name. Account names that are created purely to antagonize another user (“DavidSuckslololol”) will be banned permanently without warning.

Don’t role-play in non-role-playing rooms Seriously, it’s really annoying to the rest of us. It’s fine if you want to briefly convey an idea with a pseudo-action (“hugging” as a greeting, “exploding” as expressing excitement, etc.), but going into elaborate, novel-length descriptions of how you’re wielding your bazooka against another member while dodging his onslaught of ninja shurikens and rubbing your body against the only female in the room can really get on everyone’s nerves. We have a chat room on the site designated for role-playing; please use it. Note that members must actively switch to this room, and they will never be automatically placed into it.

Keep your little brother away from your keyboard. There seem to be a lot of mean little brothers out there who like to type inappropriate things while the pure-hearted older brother on Kongregate isn’t looking. These poor souls also often have dogs with appetites for homework. We ask that you please keep your keyboard guarded while on the site, as “wtf my little brother was using my computer i dont know what he said” is not considered a valid excuse for inappropriate behavior.

Speak the designated language for the room you are in. Kongregate is home to gamers from all around the world, and we have many chat rooms for speakers of different languages. Please be aware that each chat room on the site has a designated language that can be seen on the room selection screen, and only speak the language designated for that room. Moderators may ban users for ignoring a room’s language setting.

Tourette’s Syndrome does not apply to typing. While Tourette’s Syndrome is a very real disorder that afflicts many people across the world and results in uncontrollable outbursts of profanity, it does not result in uncontrollable typing of inappropriate language. It will not be considered a legitimate excuse for in-chat behavior. But we’ll let it slide if we ever meet you in person.

It is entirely up to the discretion of the Kongregate staff and appointed moderators to interpret and enforce the above rules. If you feel that you’ve been wronged, whether through the enforcement of these rules or through the violation of these rules by another player, feel free to report that player or moderator using the “report” link on their profile.
