GOL is the twisted result of a long battle between a dark spirit and a light spirit. He can be overpowered with darkness and have his physcial attributes increase, while when he is infused with light his energy level increases. When the two spirits overpower GOL at the same time he is able to use Vatonage, a powerful mix of light and darkness. This power is stronger than both forms, and uses the gem embedded in GOLs chest to activate. With Vatonage he has both effects from light and dark, but can only sustain the energy for short periods.
