I’ve noticed a few things, mostly in self reflection, although a little from my observations of others.
First, life is like a river. People have called time a river, one you spend underwater, never able to see what’s ahead, but able to change your general direction. I think of it differently. The world around you flows. You can choose to swim, to move left, right, forward, but many people, they try to swim backwards, to stay in one place. Thing is, swimming against a river tends to be very tiring. Trying to stay the same, fighting the world around you? It tends to result in very bad things.
Second. There is no such thing as one true love. I don’t care about you and your significant other that have been going steady for the past however so long. It’s balogne. There are plenty of people for you to love. And going back to our first lesson, you are always changing. The people in your life change you, and however you change? That’ll change the people you want to be connected with. Trying to hold onto your “true love” when you’ve both grown apart is like clutching a rose. It looks beautiful to the outside
(till it wilts. . .), but the thorns dig deeper and deeper into you, hurting you worse and worse. Eventually, it either consumes one person, and they live the rest of their life resenting the other person in the relationship, or it explodes, and both parties hate the other for the rest of their lives.
Third, and this one took me a while to figure out. Guilt will make you it’s bi**h until you move the hell on. If it’s something big, something that actually deserves guilt, not some namby pamby thing, then it will haunt you until you decide that you aren’t the person that did that, that you grew from that person. Until you realize that the past doesn’t define us, that the lessons we learn, and the way we move one does. You can’t forget, and forgiveness can be a real witch to get sometimes, but moving on is within reach.
Last. Quoting Angel. “If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do”. Leave your mark. Be it through the friends that you make, the technology you create, who you were in life, and how you are remembered are all that you’ll have left after you die.
