Rest in Peace, Sir Terry Pratchett. 1948-2015.
I’m a musician/composer/writer/artist. These days I’m more of a composer than musician ‘cause my hands are getting old, but I still play guitar, banjo, mandolin and cittern. I also play bass, mandola, violin, viola, drum, dulcimer, autoharp, quatro, vihuela, prem, aud, saus, flageolet, and string drum — but not as much as I used to… mostly because I don’t have access to them, but also because I’ve taken up drawing and have less time to practice.
As for drawing… I came to it late. I never even attempted drawing until I was 55 or so because my mother was quite a successful artist, so I felt no need to fill that niche. (I pursued writing and music instead.) Now I draw with questionable results. That is to say, sometimes I look at what I’ve done and say ‘not bad!’ and other times I face-palm, sigh, and start over… or go play music. :P
There was a period of time when I thought I wanted to be a writer, and during that time I worked as a gagwriter for magazine and strip cartoonists like Mary Brown, Morrie Turner, Bob Thaves, Revilo, etc. etc. It was very challenging intellectually and creatively, but since gagwriting is a form of ghostwriting there was no recognition to be gained from it, so I quit. (It’s actually a lot more complicated than that, but what the hell — this is just a profile, not an autobiography!)
Here’s a short ditty I wrote with gaming in mind, particularly a runner/platform game. Umgijimi
