Tock
The once steady and familiar ticking of my bedroom’s clock had seemingly begun to lose its uniformity. Each turning of the machine’s hand was not that of a second, but of nanoseconds. I thought in situations like these, the world was supposed to slow down around me, but instead it seemed to be accelerating out of control.
“Did you hear me?
I said I love you.
I love you, Brett.”
Of course I heard her. How could I have not heard her? Her words came through my phone as if she had her own lips pressed against my ear. I had no trouble processing her statement. Processing is easy. Computing comes to me naturally. What held my silence was disbelief.
Trust. I have trouble trusting others. I have difficulty believing when I reach inside to show you the monster at the bottom of the ocean that’s pulling me deeper and deeper into the darkness, that you’ll stretch out your arm to pull me up again. After all, why would you?
You might get wet.
You skin might relax in the warmth.
And as you reach down further into the water and love begins to sound more and more like a word for Coke commercials, your eyes might adjust to the darkness.
And I might just pull you in with me.

Another dark night, I begin to sense the implosion.
Sensing the erosion, I fight the despair.
My love, my devotion, I bury my face in her hair,
It feels like an ocean yet a breath of fresh air.
Odd how when I’m drowning I turn to the sea.
I have to dive beneath the surface before I can breath,
The little contradictions give life its teeth,
Like you only know you love her when she says she plans to leave.
I don’t need things to be easy, I just want to believe,
That the ocean’s free of monsters and I can stay here and sleep.
But as I sink deep my vision grows darker,
And as I plunge farther their noises grow sharper.
Their shadows grow larger, and the truth becomes apparent,
My vision is not errant, their words become coherent:
“Another contradiction- at it’s darkest, the water is most transparent”.
