I like levelling up and upgrading, but is there a real purpose in this game? Any main quest for the explorers?

Not really. I originally wanted to 'encourage' player death and restarting with unlocked perks and stat bonuses. The idea was for the 'highest score/best character' to be the goal. But... the way it turned out the feeling pf the game seems to be more of a single story/campaign. Oh well, next time :\
