We want Flash games to stay free! I also agree… and disagree. I’m never going to make a game and make it entirely pay to play or a crippled demo, ever. I enjoy being able to play all the free flash games out there just as much as you do- that’s why Bubble Tanks Tower Defense has the whole main game available all the way to the end. But as I said I disagree too, games cost a lot of time (and money) to make. BTTD took a total of 4 months working full time with no other job to produce, it’s over 20,000 lines (400 pages) of code! And I want to make even better and bigger games than this in the future! Not that I can’t get money other ways such as through sponsorship. But two big issues come up. The first is, why make a huge long game like BTTD when I could make a quick small game such as Jimmy Bubblegum and get the same amount of money. The second is this: what better games could I be making if I had a better budget? I think we’d both agree there is a big difference between low budget and high budget movies, it works the same way with games. You’ve seen what is possible on low budgets, what could we make with bigger ones? I’m always striving to find new ways to find the money to make great games, but still make them free to the players- by hosting the small amount of EC on ArmorGames.com, we can do that. One of the alternatives would be to cut out half the levels out of BTTD due to time constraints. In the end though, the extra content is just that, extra content. If you don’t want to go over to ArmorGames to play the bonus levels or experiment with cheats, you certainly don’t have to. Don’t pretend like it’s just a demo or crippleware, I’ve loaded the game with far more content than 99.99999999% of the other games on this site. I hope you’ll reconsider your rating and consider judging the game for what IS on Kongregate, not the tiny portion that is off it- and understand that by using this business model we can ultimately make better free games for you the player. I liked Kong the way it was: with great free games that I could complete without ever leaving the site. Anything that moves away from that model hurts my enjoyment of the site and I will continue to rate all those games 1/5. Many great games with coding times and effort as great or greater than what you claim above were posted here for free and without forcing me to leave the site. If they could find a way to make the model work I don’t see why you and other programmers feel the need to move to this model. I’m sure bigger budgets could lead to better games (as one can see on the consoles) but I want the small budget/free games model to survive and see all these recent moves to “extra content” on other sites and pay to play “features” as attempts to kill off the exact type of gaming that brought me to Kong in the first place. If you can’t survive with the old model than by all means move to a pay-model like on Xbox arcade but I don’t want that here and I really wish Kong would simply ban all games that force people offsite or to pay. show less

I understand why you disagree, but we see the new models as far better for all those involved and are going to continue in that direction I think. All the industry is moving in the same direction, we ALL love the smaller free games and they will always be around and Hero Interactive will still be making those along with our other bigger titles. Thanks for your thoughts and insight. Cheers show less |
