Meep888, the hammer monster that you are thinking of is called "Hammery." (But I usually refer to him as simply "that hammer guy.") And you are right, he IS pretty darn awesome. But I really wish I could play as the monster on the title screen (the one who looks like ballor with six long legs), he would be awesome!
The ultimate weapons are the clock, the plates, the mirror (use the lightning, it has no cooldown time), the birdcage, and the bathroom cabinet (use the snake).
Oh, so THAT'S what you do with the glowing box! In the wisdom-gem powered gate on the winter palace side, go left to the 4 doors, go through the 3rd door from the left, and place the glowing box in the square hole in the monolith all the way to the right. One of the runes that you need to enter in the code box in the great hall will appear on the monolith.
This is a really cool game... Needs achievements for completing the game and collecting all secrets to unlock bonus content. I have done both of those.
Really awesome game. Shadow actually isn't very hard, you just have to make him/her hit himself with his/her own meteorites and then collect the dark gems.
