"Huh, new RPG. What's the rating? Oh, it's Nerdook. Rating doesn't matter, it'll be good." And it was. :) I agree the progressive character development between games would be neat, but this is fine as it is.
Why do the charm effects have to come from naked girls? Why can't we have naked male knights running around the field for the other half of society's amusement? ;) This is one of my rare 5/5 games, so I'm hardly complaining, but it would be great to see some badass women in the sequel too!
Yeah, after playing most of the way through on medium, I'm convinced the duck and cover mechanic ruins this game. The obstacles just aren't enough to be a threat, when I can hold down for 90% of the level and never, ever be hurt unless I miss a jump. I think all it would take to fix this game is making firing your gun take you out of cover -- some of the timing issue it would raise would be really fun -- but until then, it's kind of silly. Still love everything else about the game but I gotta give it a 2/5 with the overpowered defense. :|
Hmm, the only criticism I really agree with is that heal and shield are a little too similar. You already strain your mana resources by focusing on more than one spell -- why not make them all really distinctive? But there are a lot of little things that I just love about this game -- the speed of a single match compared to a big drawn-out TD level, the generosity with skill points, the fact there's no "perfect skill" and I have to keep resetting to deal with subtly different tactical situations ("hmm, do I have to speed rush this level, or sit down for a long slog?"). These are just the sort of decisions that make strategy games interesting for me, so... great sequel!
I keep going through cycles with this game. I get bogged down and frustrated and start losing respect for it... and then I figure out what I'm doing wrong and it's awesome all over again. If that doesn't deserve a 5/5, I don't know what does.
