Being limited to 1 birth per "tick" makes pointless to increase the animals count, once you are near 100% birth rate, it just increase the death chance; it also makes lower tier animals not profitable in any way, i earn more money with 800 mouses than with 5000 for example
Actually the formula I've just implemented makes it better to have more of an animal than the previous one for the same amount of BR and DR (with same level of upgrades). It has been designed the way you're saying,, less mice is better than more, you would struggle to keep 800 of later animals, without 'more' upgrades + more animals. EDIT: I am going to add a purchase in the prestige shop to increase the number of animals being born per tick.
The update made mid-late gameplay quite dull... Im on ascension 1, 17 points: i get the fleet cap while conquering world 3. Now it's just upgrading science and ship modules. Not much more to do...
Corvettes are way better than Frigate and Destroyers... For example, a destroyer takes 4x naval capacity than a corvette but has only 2x more points for modules...

Mouseover menu on the investments telling me Earning per hour and total earnings for the selected investment
