~
wsuslack: At least Hitler wasn’t as bad as obama, praise jesus.
~
Alteir: Eh I think people need to stop thinking in binary
solprovider: I have 3 categories. That’s trinary
~
solprovider: I don’t understand “innocence” or “guilty”. Guilt is going against your own ethics. That doesn’t affect me. Innocence typically means ignorant, which is already a word and doesn’t require a synonym with strange connotations
solprovider: Individuals have ethics. Societies have ethics. Guilt always means that those ethics were violated
AspiringWriter: So in theory, an individual may violate societal ethics, but not their own and thus feel no guilt. So the decision to try and imprison them is the society’s guilt for the victim. This sums up basic law, no?
solprovider: Few criminals feel they are guilty. What they did was fine within their own ethics. But society could not tolerate their actions, against the society’s ethics (usually codified as “laws”) and handled by the society’s policies
Alteir: I think many criminals know what they did was wrong.
solprovider: Alt, No. Those criminals may know what they did violated the society’s ethics. But they could not have done it if it violated their personal ethics.
solprovider: Ethics can be situational. Is it wrong to steal? Is it wrong to steal to feed your starving children?
Alteir: but they do it anyway because they end up better having that action than not.
