Sep 7, 2011 10:40am You hate crash courses and it seems the majority of members who play your games hate them. Karma?

You’ve never given me criticism. You’ve just said my games suck. I think YOU should try making a game with Stencyl and coding parts of it too.

Okay, well that’s better. Do you mind if I use your idea of “The Runner” but make everything myself?

Okay and how do I make a nice background like the one you used in Just Another Platformer?

I usually make the scene color a vertical gradient on the scene properties or decorate the scene using tiles but if you use tiles make sure that the start game actor has no collision

I don’t know if you guys know this or not, but you can make many of these buttons in your games by using an attribute for scene and then not applying it to the actor type but the individual actor by going to its scene and double clicking on it with the regular mouse tool then applying the behavior to it there. Do this for all your buttons and you can select them to go to different scenes. An example of this is in my game, Jumpin’ Jack. This application of a behavior to a specific individual works with all of the actor behaviors and can be very helpful. show less

Jul 29, 2011 3:59pm Sorry, for not responding sooner (I was without internet access all week). To use kongregate API, simply setup a behavior for your score scene that uses these blocks in this order: [when created] [set up Kongregate API] [submit score to K with name: (The name for the statistic sent) and value: (value of statistic sent)].

[when created] [if (score) > (highscore)] [set up Kongregate API] [submit score to K with name: (The name for the statistic sent) and value: (score)]. Then when they click on the go back to main menu button it sets the highscore to score and then the score to 0, like this: [always] [if mouse has been pressed over self] [if not (score has been changed?)] [set (highscore) to (score)] [set (score) to 0] [set (score has been changed?) to true]. Then when they click the play button it changes (score has been changed?) back to false. Sorry it’s so spread out, I had to do that to fix other glitches and I think it might be the reason mine works and the tutorial version fails. show less

Wish I could tell you how to configure a behavior like this, but stencylworks just swallowed all of my RAM when I tried to open and I don’t remember all of the blocks necessary. All I can tell you right now is that the API should be in the behavior that adds score if you want it to send every time the score changes. Here’s the best example I can do: [if (whatever)] [increment (score) by (value)] [set up Kongregate API] [submit to K with name: (statistic name) and value: (score)] it’s a primitive and crude representation of how it would be set up but it should work for now. Sorry it took so long to respond, I thought that kongregate would send me a message if someone commented on my comment again, but it didn’t :P. show less

It is usually best if jumping velocity is higher than walking velocity.

Don’t forget to make the game attribute reset to 0 when you die or advance to the next stage. And if you want to you can set it up to draw the seperate attributes so that players can know how close they are to the next level. With or without that you should have a working kill requirement for level advancement system. Thank you for the interesting question, and please feel free to ask as many as you want. :D show less
