how do you use manuals to apply a trait to a hero?

unable to reliably reproduce it, but it happens on average once or twice a week for me where the game locks up during a battle and nothing can be done to fix it, refreshing page simply loads the battle again - still locked up - just have to wait several hours before i can play again.
