Right, so, after playing the whole thing, I noticed that the bonus level comes after the end of the game, there is is indeed a graphic for 4 pearls, it is just only used at the end of the game. The timer never came into play after the first few levels--I just got 5 minutes each level and after the first few levels, that was way more time than I needed--it seems that a lot of the challenge in this game is locked up n the front and peters out after that. The game also has a curious habit of switching around pairs that I didn't select. I would click on the one I wanted to swap and it would randomly try to swap along the opposite axis. It's a fun game, it just needs some touching up.

Also, there is no indication of whether 3 or 4 pearls are needed on a side--there is no graphical indication.

I have found that if you manage to free the last pearl you need at 2-3 secnds before the timer runs out, you'll get the game over screen as it settles in, and then the victory screen. You'll advance to the level select screen and be unable to get rid of the overlaying "restart" button, essentially breaking the game.
