As others have said, your units max out relatively quickly and once they max out, any XP they get becomes useless. This problem is highlighted with your hero unit. I'm about halfway through the trials and my hero unit is at around 4,000 unusable XP. By any chance, could we use this excess XP to upgrade other units or at least serve a function ?
