If your ship has two or more slots, you can NOT equip a second ( third or forth) slot until you upgrade the ship. Then the red slot turns blue, meaning you can equip another weapon.

I got the 108 stars achievement by going "Back to the Main Menu" and clicking "Achievements" button. Got the Icebreaker Badge after doing that.
