I eat, then make random strands like mad, then eat more, then make more random strands all over. It works surprisingly well, until you get a couple fireflies and a queen bee :( its all down hill from there. Then you have to gradually fill the corners with small strands, praying you get some flies and a lady bug or two. I managed to make it to the bat level while just being in the corners for the majority of the time I was playing.
