I agree healing surges are a weird concept, but they designed 4E entirely around making combat and classes balanced, and darn the fluff. Flavor it as each person’s body can only handle so much magical healing before they need a rest.

-Rogues and Rangers are both Strikers, and good ones at that. If your Ranger isn’t using Twin Strike then he’s Doing It Wrong™.
-Bard is totally a core class, they’re just in PHB2. Wizard’s new definition of “core” is “everything we publish.” Oh, and I love that Bards are really effective now, instead of just kinda being there most of the time.
Probably my favorite thing about 4E is that the classes are all balanced, and that my Fighter can actually protect the squishy Wizard. In 3.5, you had to go for the spiked chain tripper build to actually prevent enemies from hitting somebody other than you. In 4E, I mark something and then punish it for going after somebody else.
