Adjacent is an adjective meaning, “lying near, close, or contiguous; adjoining; neighboring”. Here it is in a sentence: “Things are adjacent when they lie close each other, not necessary in actual contact; as, adjacent fields, adjacent villages, etc.”.
Coincidently the wiki article does seem quite accurate and in no way states adjacent to mean only direct horizontal or vertical connection.
