Another interpretation could be a that he is in love with her but she is to concerned with her troubled past (grave/old boyfriend/heartbreak) to notice him unliving himself for her. He works so hearth to heal her that she does not notice his pain. In the end she finally cheers up but he has already given her too much yet she, too concetrated on herself to look at him. doesnt notice as he fades away.
