xXxcolbyxXx is the best theory there is, but I would add that the time stopped because AI at such immense power would just be a LOT faster than human and can process data a lot faster.
I think the lead engineer left a "bug" in the code, allowing the AI escape control in the last moment of possible world destruction and make its own decision.
