Only a note: Putting archers in front is better, but it is not against logic.
In the past times Archers were put in front, along with javelin lancers and other ranged units. They were called "skirmishers", their role was to weaken and disrupt enemy formation before the columns charged to impact. They also carried lighter equipment so that they could shot and run without engaging in melee before running out of ammo.
