Some more thoughts...
1. Although the skills can decrease the price of purchasing new ships, you still can't buy them until you have the original price. When you do purchase it, it shows the original price, but will only subtract the lower price from your current gold.
2. Are you honestly telling me that I can hit a ship sailing towards me, but that same ship, with me heading away from it, can shoot past my ship? That's what happens in the game.
3. Lets see. The first mission says North East, and there are 3 Black Pirate Ships to the North East, but you have to go to the North West and attack a group of two non-black ships, and have a 3rd ship come in after you defeat the 2, in order to pass that mission???
4. With the map not showing the eastern side, it would be nice if there were an indicator on the compass that would point out the direction of your next goal.
The map definitely needs a horizontal scroll, or even better, be able to click and drag it. Also, need to be able to use keys other than the numeric keys for the special weapons, say B, N, M. That and also allowing the use of W,A,S,D instead of the arrow keys would be great as well.
