It's challenging but after two or three waves you can put enough skill points into something like mercenaries and be good for the rest of the game. You should cut back on the amount you get each wave. 3 or 5 points seems excessive. Otherwise a good game, I wouldn't call it overly hard; people just expect to be able to mindlessly put down towers and win...
