I only used swordmen and archers. They rule! (also archers)
My strategy:
First: for upgrades, upgrade your statues head.
Second: at the start of every battle, make 1 miner, (2 on giants level, as they are slow and won't reach you as fast) and then make heaps of swordmen.
Third: take control of a miner at the start and press space twice, and go back, press space twice, which makes your gold rise faster. While you are doing this, make 3 swordmen, then a miner, and repeat.
Fourth: Make an archer if you have over 1000 gold.
Upgrades:
1) Upgrade your statues head first, all the way.
2)Upgrade your miner secondly, 2 on pickaxe and 2 on bag. Should be done on first 4 chapters.
2) Upgrade your swordmen, 1 on sword, then one for archer. Repeat.
When the enemy has an archer, zigzag up to it with a controlled swordman. (Do not take control of archers).
Spamming soldiers is the easiest way.
