Okay, how do I give the henkeeper the golden egg so I can get the fertilizer?
Giving items is generally done simply by talking to the NPCs while carrying the item.

I think I found a bug. I dug down really far, and am now unable to dig any further...or at all, for that matter.
My guess is your pick axe broke, that's why you can't dig any more. Eventually you'll hit purple blocks you can't mine through yet too.
