Can't log in or play the game at all it just says "Lost connection to server".

The expedition system is a very good idea but the costs should be lowered
Make sure you're claiming your progress rewards! They should provide more than enough gold to run plenty of expeditions as you level up. And once you're high-level the cost of running them is trivial :)
