Me, I didn't realize you could melee attack the second column of monsters. Both regular attack and with axes and spears. DUH! Made this much easier!

Agreed with many of the comments, that with the shading, orange and yellow often look way too much alike... esp. on Level 16. For the record, there is no yellow on the top half of level 16, and no orange on the bottom half of level 16.
