there is an old game 'Gun Run'. Its quite similiar to this game, but i like it more because of several reasons:
1st character can move sideways
2nd the art is extraordinary and simple, but not distracting
3rd i get in the action very fast.
i suggest you play it before creating a 2nd part of this game
