if newly summoned foes can attack on the summon turn, it is nearly impossible to beat the game. I beat epic battle fantasy 4, but can't get past the third boss here.

you should be able to regenerate after battle.

after you have completed the game, how do you restart from the beginning of your saved file with everything you already have?

why doesnt the "random cast revive" always revive the dead?

revive should be cast more often by the pope's dress. If it rarely ever auto revives the wearer, there really isn't that much effect.
