First thought was that I liked the low-res look, and the ambient moodiness of the sound. Playing the game reminds me of Slender, and I was thinking "The Stalker" would get creepier and creepier with every gas can you find - but actually, the game's a straight simulation of you versus one guy with a long range rifle.
When I played a second time, I found the map was randomly generated - nice. And then I found out that I was lucky the first time, and this game is actually going to be pretty hard..
There are some good ideas here, but the game needs polish and extra development.
The game needs some extra instructions. At the beginning of the game, I found myself hitting keys on the keyboard to try and figure out how to shoot - until I found that moving forwards made you shoot automatically. (I'm guessing that's to avoid keeping still, but I'd like to know that ahead of time.) When I gained shooting power-ups, I didn't know why; and I had to look below the game window for the controls.
The enemies don't try to destroy your ship, so the game is a pure scoring run. Scoring run games are OK, but I felt that you needed a few more activities beyond "keep hitting" and "keep dodging".
I see this is the second game you've published - so far, so good. You've put together a game with good handling and flow, good presentation, and the game feels complete. Next up is to start studying and polishing your games, to bring out what's really fun about them.
Ouch! Gotta look into it, but I need more details.
What do you mean by "zoomed out of the page to make the game window smaller"?
If you mean using the browser's zoom function to zoom out the page, I tried zooming out until 10% of the original size in both Firefox and Opera and I couldn't replicate the bug, the room could still be left without any problem. =P
I noticed that if you tap the slide button repeatedly, you never lose the initial speed boost and can just zoom down the hallway.
A little disappointing that after the intro, it was just a Canabalt game, but it's a reasonably nice one.
@apollonianking: I came here from the thread in the Programming forum - he's figuring out how multiple-file uploads work on Kongregate.
betsylee, it's possible to upload the game but keep it in private until you're sure all the kinks are out.
The idea of a procedurally generated action platformer is good, but this game has problems; it's hard for all the wrong reasons. Some suggestions:
1. Don't give the monsters invulnerability time when they're hit. You have a certain range/rate of attacking, that should be enough limitation.
2. When you're in invulnerability, let the player move freely and not get knocked around by monsters.
3. Don't make the spikes kill you. Punish the player by hurting them badly, but an instant game over is too harsh.
4. When you get burnt or poisoned, there's no way to shake the effect, and it effectively means you've been hit for double or triple damage. Make the effect something other than damage, or give the player an ability to shake it off somehow.
5. The castle is made of randomly chosen set pieces, but the player quickly gets used to the set pieces they see. Change the random generation by analyzing each of your set pieces, then generate random variations of their mechanics.
I've noticed a few people commenting on "lack of continues". I'm not sure what they mean.
It's possible to start a new game after you die, and in the initial "level select" screen, get a choice of continuing at whatever level you died on.
I probably should add a mute function, though. I'll get to that sometime soon.
This may be a spoiler, but I don't think revealing the secret actually spoils anything - hiding the instructions just gets in the way of actually playing the game..
Click on the button that matches the cursor's current colour.
It's a simple game, but I like the details - having to jump back and forth over the gap in the building, and how attacking a slime has to be done just so, or else you get pounced.
3/5, keep going.
This stopped loading near the end - might be because there's security that keeps it from being copied to other sites.
You need to submit your own games to Kongregate, not someone else's.
