Scout is always worth it. Have combat units to start an attack, then send scouts in and bleed the bar down. Plus, a scout charge is always great for giving the enemy a run for their money. Also make sure you go after the mountain trolls first if you don't play as them, their mountain trolls are unstoppable on high difficulty.
You don't know why people say the game is bad? Maybe its because the interface is confusing and all the tutorial does is tell you to click things with no explanation.
