Actually, you can flank. If you have infantry on both sides of an enemy unit you'll gain substantial bonuses in combat. Formations are also useful: Shield Walls are important to maintain (automatically forms after charging if your units are set up correctly), since it acts like Fortify; and Boar's Snout formations are useful for the first couple of turns (units share the lead's movement speed, I think).
Good game! Constructive criticism... I'd rather endure bullet hell than have to face those random vector, instant enemy lasers. Have to get lucky to pass the last boss without a grind. =u=
Fix to improve game quality: Has a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, especially in the introduction. Tips are impermeable and sometimes get in the way of the game. Can get around this by hiding the menu and using hotkeys, but in the first zombie room, tips are in the way of the hotkey display. In the main interface, can't transition between "move" and "shoot" without first closing the respective interface. Same thing in battles; the character menu has to be closed before opening the enemy menu. Feels clunky. BGMs seem to cut off abruptly.
The front of the last half of the final wave in the first map stopped moving, blocking the rest of them off... and they wouldn't be budged with the calendar. ;-; I quit.
This new version has so many improvements... it's like an entirely different game. Graphics were improved, music is vastly better and balance between all the new classes seems to be in order, particularly for a beta. Everyone's biggest gripe is the way you start with a "Junior" class with reduced stat growth rates and must pay 500 gold to unlock the Senior. People don't understand that 500 gold is relatively easily accumulated throughout the course of the game; one would want to be more informed about the advanced classes before making their decision; so having a Junior class is a stage most will get through. SS2 is far more immersive in its depth than its predecessor, with a real storyline, a world full of NPCs with quests, seamless areas and more difficult gameplay that encourages people to play in groups. It has its flaws; it was just released a few hours ago, after all, but the game is more than playable in Open Beta and the administration is actively updating it.
