It would be nice if you could actually buy things with the gold. It's so pay to play lopsided that it takes away from gameplay.
You can find gems in chests, as well as more keys, pets, and other loot. The key (ha!) is to open chests to find the things you want. :)

Anyone else unable to get the game to load?
This happens sometimes as I often make changes to the code, and when that code uploads and you're attempting to play, or, open the game - It doesn't load. Refresh will fix this issue.

That's cool...My shield condition remains at zero after paying for two repairs and I'm unable to afford to buy a shield. So I'm just stuck in town...
This was during updating the repair functions, fixed.

The game loads...sort of. I make a customize my character and then when I go to complete it, goes black and doesn't load...hmm
