Yes it is 10 currently. You can still get more free gems via expedition rewards, by referring other players, winning them in a contest in social media (e.g. Facebook) or by using Kreds you've received for free by doing third party offers.
No this isn't possible currently, but the original positions aren't really better than random ones. You can check the game's Facebook page to find some working layouts for the workshop.
I have to say this is pretty cool and when I said do you gain Units automatically like most idle games I realized I was gaining some automatically but sadly I couldn't edit my post to remove that dumb question :| ... Keep it up!
This game says Idle so do you eventually gain Units automatically? I ask cause When I think of a idle game I think of a game like Clicker Heroes where you get the currency automatically.
