Jan 7, 2012 7:37pm I actually love how the ATV riders are so dead serious. The hard-sell education is hilarious in a good way. I think I’ll remember a point or two from the game. Great job and hope to see more!

The hard-sell education was pretty much a given from our funders, so we tried to have fun with it. We figured the only way we’d get people to sit up and pay attention to this stuff would be to make it fun. Glad you enjoyed the game, and learned a bit about ATV safety, too. show less

Aug 25, 2011 5:36pm Just finished the game, love it, feels like i’m really in an interactive movie! Loved every second of it! The only complaint i have is the fight, i’d love to see if there was some challenge in it, like a timer of an enemy’s attack. For the learning feeling, it ’’was’’ there, but it was executed very well. Snazzy job, hope you do more in the future.… show moreJust finished the game, love it, feels like i’m really in an interactive movie! Loved every second of it! May 5, 2011 1:06pm I appreciate your putting in the time and effort to respond to my comment. The issue here, I think, is in the understanding of what constitutes a game and what it means to educate. The issue here, I think, is in the understanding of what constitutes a game and what it means to educate. Daniel Floyd and his team have a lot to say on the subject, it’s a recurring motif in their “Extra Credits” column, featured in Escapist magazine. Safety is certainly a worthwhile subject matter. I understand that experimentation is important, and a trial-and-error process (which is mostly error by definition). The oversight here is that deliberately educational games usually try too hard to be educational, to the point that the “game” part gets lost. Everything is educational in some way, and trying so hard to drive a point home makes it less effective. Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of subtlety. show less

We still think the game is an enjoyable experience – the art and story certainly seemed to make up for the lack of gameplay for a lot of players – but we would have loved to add more “core” gameplay to the game, too. The end user doesn’t care about such things, but our hands were largely tied in this department; one of the requirements of the funder was that we never let the player actually do something wrong, which precludes building any gameplay elements on that. Combine that with stipulations for no racing, no stunts, no dangerous terrain, etc., and we were really struggling to come up with a way to teach this rather large set of diverse material in an entertaining way, and (I personally think) we came up with a compelling, fun, and entertaining way of doing it, even if it isn’t all that game-like. Regardless, our next game should not run afoul of this particular criticism – there will be a lot more “core” gameplay, and the educational content is easily woven into it, so we can be more subtle with the educational message. show less |
