I play the whole game without any pet. You want to know why?
Because a pet is just a bit annoying. You can`t revive it, can`t upgrade it, it doesn`t have any armor so it gets the same dmg everytime. And this thing is just dying and dying over and over again. So i just said "Forget it" and played the whole thing WITHOUT any Pet. And it worked fine for me.
