Hello, fellow Kongregaters. My name is Pearl Q. Swiggert (no relation to Jack Swiggert, haha). The Q. doesn’t stand for anything, much like the S in Harry S. Truman. I have come to spread the word about agnosticism. Agnosticism is truth. Apologies in advance for the psuedo-essay coming up.

Agnosticism. The belief that we as a race are not (at least for now) in a position to know what the ultimate cause of existence was and/or is, and that trying to assert definitive answers without any type of irrefutable methodology is a sign of extreme stupidity and ignorance.

Agnosticism is, currently, the one and only truth. Agnosticism is truth by definition. Agnosticism makes no claims that cannot be fully supported, other than the claim that agnosticism is truth, which I will now support because otherwise agnosticism itself would be blind faith.

Failure to accept agnosticism only shows ignorance and/or a childhood in which one was raised by ignorant people. The latter can be forgiven, as long as one is willing to accept skepticism and eventually agnosticism. The former, however, cannot. Failure to accept skepticism is also a sign of ignorance.

Skepticism. Skepticism has many definitions, but generally refers to any questioning attitude towards knowledge, facts, or opinions/beliefs stated as facts, or doubt regarding claims that are taken for granted elsewhere.

Skepticism is not to be confused with pseudoskepticism, which is often claimed by politicians, and used solely to mask stubborn disbelief. True skepticism is used to doubt, not deny, and if sufficient support and evidence is offered, there is no reason for skepticism. Otherwise, it is of utmost importance.

Skepticism must be applied to anything and everything in life. A lack of skepticism is false, blind belief or disbelief, also known as “faith”. Faith is the ability to step without looking. Faith can lead you in the right direction, but it can also lead you off of a cliff. Most religion requires you to walk straight towards one direction, without looking at where you are going. Atheism requires you to stay still because there is absolutely nothing there.

There is no difference between religion and atheism because they both require you to blindly believe, just in different things. Agnosticism says that we have the freedom to explore, as long as we look before we step to make sure there is a ground beneath your feet.

Skepticism is the process of looking at the ground beneath your feet, when religion assures you that there is ground and atheism assures you that there is nothing. If we as a race want to gain knowledge and advance, skepticism is of utmost importance.

That being said, there’s nothing wrong with maintaining a belief in God, or a disbelief in God, as long as one does not claim a 100% certainty on the subject. I personally do not believe in God, but I do not claim 100% certainty in this belief. That’s beside the point, and while I do not advocate belief or disbelief in God, like I said, it is okay to believe without claiming 100% certainty, or stubborn denial without skepticism (pseudoskepticism). Claims of 100% certainty on uncertain subjects (such as the God example) and stubborn denial free of skepticism (pseudoskepticism) are absolutely unacceptable signs of ignorance.

Agnosticism and skepticism are the best ways to cure ignorance, but they can be impeded by pseudoskepticism and arrogant claims of 100% certainty concerning uncertain subjects. This is why I believe it is okay to maintain that agnosticism and skepticism are truth.
