I think it would be great if we could play factions other than your vanilla pirates. Either commissioned directly (as in, playing the English or the Spanish), or some form of allegiance system where you’re still a pirate, but pirating for a certain country. Right now, we’re essentially given props by the English for fighting the Spanish.

Right now, we’re essentially given props by the English for fighting the Spanish.
What if we were to be given props by the French for fighting the British, or props by the Spanish to go against the Portuguese? Certain allegiances could add a small bonus to one area of gameplay, such as Spanish allegiance might have a 10% faster building construction time, or playing English might mean you get more resources from your blockades. Or other smaller, valuable but not game-changing benefits such as a 5% faster unit construction, or travel time, or higher merchant capacity, or maybe to steal a little bit into the Haven resources. Or perhaps just a different unit tree/pearl tree depending on what allegiance you have? The units are already there, really.
Right now, with just the standard Pirates, we’re all the same sort of pirates, supposedly backed by the English to supposedly fight the Spanish, but in reality 98% of all of the conflict occurs between pirates. It doesn’t make sense for pirates to be raiding each other, when they historically hit the shipping lines or colonies of major countries.
