Hit boxes are way to big, there's no risk reward system as dying has basically no meaning and for some reason on stage 2 and beyond I have an invisible enemy spawn in right next to me and fire right away in the cardinal directions.
If I would suggest something, maybe simple visual upgrades to the ship every so often, it would enhance the feeling of progress, or maybe as others have suggested when you soft reset at a certain point, maybe then the ship changes.
I found after at the start, I could easily idle with it, by mid game I was struggling to get anywhere and approaching end game, I suddenly had a massive boost in capability.
I'm not sure watch, but maybe something to make the mid game flow better would be useful.
