I am graduated in Game Design in a Brazil University, but anyone can make good games, I can give you some tips if you like.

I did The Lost Souls on 2010 I think, it took me almost 3 weeks to make it, There was a contest I wanted to join at the begining of 2011 inside Kongregate.

Making game is very difficult, especially if you are working on it alone, but I aways studied everything, art, design and programming, but it is a loooooot of fun, I looove every second..

Try to find the part you would love to work to focus, the art part, the programming part, it is aways good as a designer to know a bit of everything, but you must aways have a speciality, I love every part, but I focus on 3d art, I am killing myself to study anatomy, modelings, and lots of things, I am a big fan of Naughty Dog, so I base a lots of things on them and I hope one day join their team.. heheh =p

About programs, I used Maya 3D, Photoshop and Unity 3D to create the game.

I would suggest you to use Blender 3D as a modeling program, there are tooonss of tutorials, it is free and it is one of the best programs ever. – blender.org

For texturing there are many programs, I suggest Photoshop, but you can also use programs like zBrush or 3D Coat. But these are for later.

Actually, ZBrush is a pretty good program to learn, you can find some videos on youtube, it create million of polygons and you can sculpt on it, it is very good for making lots of kind of texture for games, like normalmaps, diffuse, hightmap, etc.

The game engine to use, for me, the best and most accessible in the market is Unity 3D.

There is a free version, and you can use 30 trial from the pro version for free, download it on www.unity3d.com , there are also a lot of tutorials on internet to learn it.

There you will have to learn how to program too, there are javascript and C#, it can be very easy to create simple games.

A tip, start from bellow, make a very simple game, with very simple models, with a simple design, make a lot of tests, try lots of things, show people to see it, to give you critics, and aways see bad critics in a constructive way to learn.

To resume I used Unity 3D as a GameEngine, I created the art with Maya 3D and used Zbrush to sculpt and make textures, photoshop for images edition for textures and I programmed the hole game in JavaScript (today I prefer C#) :p

Claro, jah estou pensando no proximo jogo, apesar de ter parado por causa do TCC.. de terror tbm… \o estilo esse mas mais macabro … e qnt mais gente, melhor =]
