u have to earn research points so that u can buy stuff at the weapons page
well by upgrading ranks ur getting research points aswell so that u can upgrade ur weapons or buy a new weapon

btw there was a gitch where i battled a guest and he was on the same exact place i was and when i pressed exit it didnt work
