Jun 15, 2011 9:10pm about Boss Battle: at some point, If you go down too much and then you try to go up, the controls get stuck and then the ship goes to the left, or to the bottom-left corner, like if a key is pressed down …. the only way I can continue is to pause the game and reclick the screen… this happened to me like three times

Players with slow computers win easily; players with fast computers can’t survive. Mechanical Commando is a good example of an old frame-based game that is impossible on modern computers. For a consistent experience, action games must be based on the clock, maybe with allowances for slow framerates. My game “Aclors Contact” is clock-based but gives one extra frame after what should be death to help slower computers, which allows the Edge score (closeness to death) to exceed 100%. show less

The top of the list (least earned during the last 3 months) are all frame-based games where difficulty increases with computer speed. You should not calculate temporary frames. Time-based means calculating positions based on the clock when each frame is drawn. The complexity comes from detecting collisions that happen between frames. Yes, that was trivial in Aclors Contact since the hit is where the mouse is clicked and the hit areas grow without moving. Boss Battle has many moving objects. From your “would have to do multiple frames at once”, sounds like objects only moved for each frame and the collision detection only checked the current positions. With an extremely slow framerate, objects could pass through each other. With time-based, you need a function comparing the last frame’s positions with the new frame’s positions of two objects. In my (still unreleased) sequel, I use two phases: “Is there any overlap?”, then “did they touch?” show less

If I were to rectify this, I would sooner have it “skip drawing this frame and just do the next one” than calculate complex body collision. show less

Speaking of the WASD issue, I believe it’s been fixed. All I need to do is confirm that the issue has been fixed, and I’ll be able to publish the fix on kongregate!

easy fix! add an option to have different bullet color in the options menu, and let it be white on default. great game btw

Jun 16, 2011 10:10am You asked about bug which i had in boss battle. I played today again and I haven’t got it, so maybe it’s ok now. Anyway i found something, which is not probably excepted to be: in fight with the last boss i just moved maximum to the bottom and none of bullets could reach me ;) I was playing on easy mode so i dunno how it looks on harder modes.
