Adding skills to speed up gain could be better done. There is no different feeling if you put 100 or 500 in a task. Maybe a bit more info there would be great
It's based on economics - more gain requires even more investment. You're right it's not clear at first. When you do get to the next stages of the game, worrying about specific amount of skill assigned becomes automated and isn't nearly as necessary.
When you are 5 min away from completing a research item, or a map item, you really should get the option to finish it for free. I know y'all milking the playerbase, but that would not kill your bottom line, and it would make it a lot more fun for us
