Definitely a step up from the first one. Dunno why everyone's complaining, but I personally love the new game modes. It's more fun than constantly having to go through the gates.
There seems to be a glitch that happens when you choose "Deploy" after previously playing a game with one of the special starting options. You start off with the special option instead of the default 4 man squad. It also crosses over careers, so if your last game on a career was started using say Hasty Defence, you will start off your first game of the new career with it. Kinda neat, actually. :P

If you want a way to turn off the sound then copy a .dll file in the firefox folder, paste it and rename it to msacm32.dll. It turns off all flash sounds for firefox. Don't know if it works for IE.
There really needs to be some keyboard shortcut to cancel movement orders or something. It's really when you HAVE to move someone just to get out of that cursor mode.
