I had some trouble for the splitting but I find a easier way. Open the inventory and press TAB. You will see a yellow square around selectable thing on your screen. Press TAB until the item you want to split is selected. Now, hold S then press SPACE BAR. Press TAB on an empty space then press SPACE BAR again. :)
