For those wondering how to get past the first castle, click the footman twice. You have to bring two frontline units, but they can be the same type. It doesn't really explain that part very well.

The melee are still horribly ineffective. While in the scenario you gave I would agree that the king can do the most damage in a single attack, I completely disagree with how often it happens. Double action for everyone, Max out the range and damage of your archer and mage. Pick up confuse and mass confuse. Toss in royal command, and chivalry. If you want to go overboard, max smite. At worst you're looking at taking two hits, but the vast majority of fights you can walk away unhurt. You don't need to be able to deal lots of melee damage when the enemies can't even get into melee range.
