I agree the progression jump to hit the hot layers is really difficult. With maxed non-plasma equipment you will basically die around 800 without obstacles. Hit couple blocks and you'll cut it short by a huge amount.

The "Line" ship just makes the final boss a joke. I shoot first, aim for deck, load the red shells, and kill him in one turn.
