It keeps erasing my inventory...I don't know if this is supposed to happen, but I cannot do anything. Once I pick up one thing or move to another room or turn, it gets rid of everything I have collected. Help?

Once I exit after the first dialogue scene at the beginning of Chapter 1, all it does is go to the flashing yellow and white lights on the left hand side of the screen... and that's all the further it will go. Help?
