I like how you can't shoot the cannon at certain angles for some inexplicable reason. ??? Way to test your game. I like the art, but the gameplay needs work and especially polish.
Not a bad start, but desperately needs sound, powerups to reward larger matches, and levels. Without those, it's just boring.
I do like the way that tiles tilt slighty when selected, and are highlighted when moused over. Extend that sort of polish to the rest of the game and you'll really improve it.
Also, you MUST allow for dragging tiles onto their neighbors to make a swap. That's how all match-3 fans play and it's an absolute necessity in one of these games. Clicking on one tile, then another to swap them takes too long.
Love the animations. However I found the gameplay a little repetitive and the controls slow to respond. Got all the gumballs I could eat just standing on the boxes at the right of each screen, holding the down arrow key and D. The dudes just walked right into my sword thrusts. :)
Lots of people don't like starting over at Level 1... I understand where you're coming from, but restarting where you left off just doesn't seem like it would work for this type of game. At least in my opinion. I may be wrong and have been before. How would the score be affected? Also, I always viewed this game like solitaire... in that once you reach Level 7 with 7 colors and only 23 moves, it's possible to get an "impossible" level. The sock layouts are completely random - the game does no checking to see whether a level is completable. (I thought about doing some checking, but it's a nontrivial mathematical problem and maybe CPU intensive.) That said, the highest level I reached during testing was level 21. And judging from Mochi some players have gone higher!
Great comments, guys. 0AP0, Sgt. Droopy, you're spot on about the bonuses needing to increase. That's one of those braindead obvious things I should have thought of but just didn't even consider. I've now set it so bonuses start at 200 points per unused move at Level 1 and double for each succeeding level. That may allow for crazy high scores, and may not make much of a difference... hard to tell. Personally once I reach Level 7 and beyond I'm lucky to finish a level with zero moves left, let alone one or more!
Thanks guys. It's not an original game idea - there are several online games (even javascript games) with this mechanic.
AngelicDagger, I like the idea of a tye dye wildcard sock. That would make things more interesting! If I get some time maybe I'll add it to the game.
